Nonprofit organizations in St. Louis, Missouri are making a significant contribution to the environment. The Missouri Environmental Coalition (MCE) is an independent environmental organization of Missouri citizens fighting for clean water, clean air, clean energy and a healthy environment. The Louis Conference on the Environment, held at the Missouri Botanical Garden, was the region's first group of independent citizens created to address a wide range of environmental policy issues. The TNC Cities Program is partnering with the Saint Louis Public School District and other community partners to launch a pilot green schoolyard program in Missouri.
This program will provide students across the state with the opportunity to receive a cash award in recognition of their work to create a more environmentally sustainable future. The Louis Community Foundation is also providing fiscal sponsorship to organizations that are in the process of establishing their status as nonprofit entities. The Summit held by TNC in Missouri resulted in the first seed funding program for Growing Green Solutions. This program has helped to address environmental injustices such as the overabundance of empty and abandoned properties, food insecurity issues, and localized floods.
